The basic <\/span>understanding of these concepts can help you to maximize <\/span>the value of the asset in terms of production recovery and\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>economical feasibility. The society of petroleum engineers <\/span>(SPE) has been guiding the oil and gas industry by establishing <\/span>some standars from the technical point of view. In this case,\u00a0 according to SPE, the Improved Oil Recovery Concept (IOR) is <\/span>“any of various methods, chiefly reservoir drive mechanisms and\u00a0 enhanced recover(y) techniques, designed to improve the flow of\u00a0 hydrocarbons from the reservoir to the wellbore or to recover\u00a0 more oil after the primary and secondary methods (water- and\u00a0 gas floods) are uneconomic”.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), is \u201cone or more of a variety of\u00a0 processes that seek to improve the recovery of hydrocarbon\u00a0 from a reservoir after the primary production phase.\u201d Several\u00a0 authors has established their criteria, for example Thomas\u00a0 (2008) quoted that EOR <\/span>\u201cimplies a reduction in oil saturation\u00a0 below residual oil saturation (Sor)\u201c<\/span><\/i>. This last definition seems\u00a0 to be in accordance with the basic phenomenum of EOR\u00a0 in the micro and macro scale affecting the capillary forces\u00a0 and viscous forces, causing a decrease in the residual oil\u00a0 saturation. Consequently, well placement optimization,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

artificial lift improvements, conformance, well stimulation\u00a0 and changing in operating conditions for example, might be\u00a0 considered as IOR rather than EOR.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However the EOR and IOR concepts are subjected after\u00a0 the primary production phase without pressure injection\u00a0 support, they might turn ambiguous. We have discussed\u00a0 earlier that the implementation of and IOR or EOR process\u00a0 can be linked to the beginning of the production phase of any\u00a0 reservoir based on their physical characteristics and fluid\u00a0 properties. Others practical perspectives suggests than\u00a0 IOR techniques are aligned to EOR process, since IOR only\u00a0 consider an improve in the flow of hydrocarbons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, it can be concluded that any process which attempt\u00a0 to affect the residual oil saturation (Sor) will increase\u00a0 oil production and recovery factor as well, thus can be\u00a0 considered as an Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) process.<\/span><\/p>\n
